OCTOBER 8 2016

I’m very proud to be included in this exhibition. The work will be on display until December 1 2016

EVOLVING TERRAIN

Presented by the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and the Fort Tryon Park Trust, Evolving Terrain brings together four artists’ work, placed throughout Fort Tryon Park. The show includes work by artists Anthony Heinz May, Audrey Shachnow, Tom Monsees, and Matthias Neumann. Their work addresses the natural landscape within an ever-changing city, and hopes to create a dialogue between communities, artists, and nature, and the ways in which the natural realm supports the built environment.

JUNE 21 2015

I found this piece of wood in the Inwood NYC Hills.

I proceeded to make a mold of the wood.  It’s a pretty complex mold comprised of 12 separate pieces.  I enlisted the help of a very good mold maker, Jessica Fan.

Next I cast the piece in Hydrostone.

This is the work as of this morning.  Still in progress but inching closer to completion.

Works in progress.  I’ve been playing around with some ideas for tree-like sculptures that include animal or insect qualities.  They were sculpted in Super Sculpey.  I haven’t decided yet what they will be cast in or what colors they will be.  I do want them to retain a quick, unpolished look though.

I’m sure I’ve said this before, but I’m going to try to post with a bit more regularity.  Unfortunately life and work seem to be forever getting in the way of intentions.

I’ve been working on a series of insect sculptures.  This one is two cicadas in bronze.  I found many cicada shells on trees around my parents house, filled one with wax, in order to strengthen it, and made a mold. I had a few cast in bronze, then I metal chased them and soldered these two together.  Finally I heated them up and applied a thin coating of wax.

I’ve also been having a lot of fun making quick tree like forms out of blown ink.

I’ve made some as cards as well:

The last thing I’d like to mention today is the music I’ve been working on.  I’ve been recording myself playing an old synthesiser (The Kitten by Octave).  Then, if it seems appropriate, I add drums, or ask other musicians to add, guitar, bass, violin, cello, or vocals.  The sounds occasionally remind me of Popol Vuh, Michael Nyman, Zbigniew Preisner, and a bit of Goblin thrown in for good measure.

My goal, if I ever have the time and space, is to make short claymation films to accompany each of the songs, or give them to The Brothers Quay to use on one of their shorts, that would be just as good.
